Tired but can’t sleep well. Does it not sound weird? Off course it does. And you’re not alone because this is a common problem with our generation, right. But did you ever ask: Why?
Because we are mentally so overworked and at times deluded.
Our modern life has become overly complex and we constantly get caught up in the never-ending struggles of life.
And we take these issues with us to bed.
We have become so good at breaking every rule-set Mother Nature has laid down for us that we are now facing weird consequences – tired but can’t sleep well is a prime example, also anxiety disorder and poor health.
Do you wonder why the animals living in the jungle do not have this problem?
So what do you do about it? Is there an easy solution?
The answer is a resounding YES. But you need to be prepared to make some simple lifestyle changes my friend.
You need to consciously review your lifestyle first:
- On how you think or react?
- How you currently do things in your everyday life?
- What you eat?
- The company you keep – people you hang out with. This is a weird one, right. Let’s talk more about it below.
- What kind of physical exercise you do?
Why is there a need for a sincere review of your lifestyle?
Because sleep disorder is a lifestyle problem in most cases.
If you want to sleep better then you have to first identify what’s causing your sleep disorder, and then remove it using a structured and methodical approach.
There are habits you can change using simple strategies. These good habits will help you to think and live better and also reduce overthinking.
Healthy habits and practices like meditation or mindfulness will make you feel calm and peaceful by managing your stressful thoughts better.
Stressful thought is the main culprit, right because it keeps you awake, and prevent you to get a goodnight’s sleep.

02 – Early to bed early to rise makes a man/woman healthy, wealthy and wise
What a beautiful old saying. And it is perfect. Good sleep is a must for living a healthy life because sleep repairs our body and mind.
- So please make necessary changes to your lifestyle; and go to bed early and wake up early.
- Go to bed on a fixed time every day. So that your body clock remains in good shape.
- Well, if you’re not a morning person, do what’s best for you but stick to a schedule.
I will be the first one to hold my hands up, and accept that many times I have messed up my body clock by working late night, watching TV or reading something on the Internet.
On some days I have gone to bed as late as 2 am. Can you relate with me?
And I could not sleep maybe till 4 am because I just could not fall asleep. My mind was too active – a very good example though I was tired but can’t sleep.
Did it ever happen to you?
So you can see, our mind needs time to settle down and become quiet, and sleep gradually comes after that.
03 – Do something nice before you go to bed
Listen to music, read, meditate, pray, have sex or masturbate or whatever.
- But do not do anything which is work related. Let your mind learn it is an exclusive time for sleep only.
- No future planning or nothing of that sort at this hour. Gently talk to your mind and say: my friend we will do everything tomorrow because now it’s time for me to sleep.
- Before I lie down, I sit in the bed and close my eyes for 2 minutes and do a little prayer. I say to my mind that I am truly grateful with whatever I have achieved today. And this simple thing works wonders.
I have also found that if I do not do anything at least an hour before I go to bed, it really helps me to fall asleep fast. So you can try these out, and see what works best for you because no two person are the same.
04 – Give your stressful thoughts to someone else to look after it
Are you wondering what I mean by that? Well, this is a common tactic used in India from 1000’s of years.
Yogis and great teachers suggest you close your eyes and pray sincerely when you go to bed. You can pray to whoever you like or believe. Maybe God, Jesus, a Guru, the Universe or Mother Nature.
You will then visualize in your mind that you have put all your worries, thoughts, anxiety and everything that is in your mind into a bag. Then you will tie the bag. And give it to someone I mentioned above.
After that you’ll pray and tell them: please take care of it now because I want to sleep peacefully.
And you’ll sincerely ask for their blessing and support. Trust me. Blessings will soon come to you from every direction – in unbelievable ways.
As a little boy I learned this from my beautiful Grandmother (Dida in my mother tongue). And I practice it all the time. Try this simple technique and when you practice regularly, it will work wonders for you.
05 – After dinner rest a while, after supper walk a mile
This beautiful old saying, says it all. We need to eat on time. Do not eat late. And we need to keep our supper light.
This simple good habit will not only improve your sleep; but it will also help you to stay in good shape and remain healthy.
After you eat you need to give your body enough time to digest the food.
When we sleep immediately after having food we will gain weight – no doubt about that. And I have seen it in my own life.
But there are different views though. Personally, I feel bloated and uncomfortable if I go to bed immediately after having food – so I avoid doing that.
Sleeping immediately after having food may also cause you heartburn, acid re-flux, or even stroke according to a study done at the University of Loannina Medical School in Greece.
